The last Team Strange Buttlite was in 2000. 3 years before we started riding in rallys. But of course we read and heard a lot about them. The mental and physical challenge of a multi-day event is different than the 24hr format we're more familiar with. We had always talked about possibly entering the Iron Butt 11day rally but the time commitment is extreme but we had agreed if Team Strange did another Buttlite we would be in for sure. Rumors of the Buttlite 4 had been around for years and they finally came true and our summer vacation was set. August 8-15th 2006, a 7 day rally. Despite reading all the Buttlite Archives, this was going to be fun. Spending a better part of a month prepping the bikes we thought ourselves thoroughly prepared. Chris Berg agreed to ride with us reuniting Team Newbie for another go. You can read his ride report here. It's just a 24hr ride x7 right? Not at all. Talking with vets gave us some idea we would need to maintain a steady competitive pace and leave enough in reserve to finish. Really, we would need to find out for ourselves what that would mean. For months the start location was given as "within 250miles of Minneapolis". Given Team Strange's affection for Niobrara, NE this was the obvious location but there were so few accommodations in town we didn't think it was possible. No rider would want to tent it before a rally like this. Finally the location was revealed and indeed it was Niobrara. The gave this info to the riders only making sure they got all accommodation's before any spectators. Except someone let it leak a bit early and ended up with a debt to pay. The fun was starting already!
Rally time approached. Paul
Sundet was staying with us in the cabin we rented at the state park so
we all headed down together. Paul had ridden with us before on a GLMC
event so he was also a Team Newbie member. Off to Niobrara we go! |
